George Smith, the founder of Glenlivet distillery established his distillery in the year 1824 in an environment, which suited the production of whisky. It is built near the Josie’s well having a huge content of mineral rich spring water, a crisp mountain air and a beautiful environment at a high altitude with freezing temperature the effects of which makes the spirit of Glenlivet most serene one. The cool temperature of the water helps in enhancing the spirit quality of the Glenlivet and helps a lot in distillation process. The natural resources present in the surroundings aids in making the best Malt Whisky at Glenlivet Distillery.
The three fundamental elements used in production of Glenlivet Whisky are Spring Water, Copper Stills, and Oak Casks. The Water from the Josie’s well is used for whisky making at Glenlivet, which is very rich in minerals as it passes through mineral rich layers of limestone, and granite, which helps a lot in extracting the sugar from the ground barley.
Copper Stills in the shape of lanterns are used in whisky making at Glenlivet which encourages contact between spirit and copper thus removing impurities and resulting in a light and supreme malt whisky. It has 4 wash stills with a capacity of 15000 liters each and 4 spirit stills with a capacity of 10000 liters each. Glenlivet Whisky is kept in Oak Casks for maturation and these casks are charred from within with charcoal, which helps in filtration. The American Oaks of the Casks previously contained bourbon, which imparts fragrance of coconut and vanilla to the spirit. Bottling of the Glenlivet Whisky is done at Chiva’s Regal bottling plant at Newbridge outside Edinburgh.
The various whiskies produced by the Glenlivet are broadly grouped into three ranges namely Travel Retail range, Core Range and The Ultra Premium range.
