History

The Distillery of the Maker’s Mark Whisky is located in Loretto, Kentucky. It was built originally in 1805 and now is one of the oldest operating distilleries of the world. The distillery boasts separate departments or rooms for different process of whisky making such as the Master Distiller’s House, The Toll House, The Still House, The Fermenting Room and The Barrel Warehouse.

The process of production of Maker’s Mark Whisky has some unique characteristics as it uses water from the limestone spring fed lake in its distillery which is pure and free from iron. Yellow corn and red winter wheat are chosen selectively from small co-operative farms which gives the whisky a very soft and mellow taste. All the ingredients are checked thoroughly before using and are rejected if it does not meet the quality standards.

Small roller mills are used for scorching of grains which although slow is a better process. After scorching the grains are cooked slowly in an open cooker with lots of attention and the yeast is added to it for fermentation. The distillery has cypress fermentation tanks which are very old. The whisky at Maker’s Mark is made in very small batches of less than 19 barrel per batch which ensures proper attention at every step resulting in a better quality product. The whisky is distilled doubly once in copper columns for producing low wine and then in copper pot still to produce high wine. This double distillation removes all impurities and produces a more refined and smooth tasting whisky.

Maker’s Mark whisky is not aged for a definite period of time but taster’s are employed to taste the whisky at different periods of time and when the perfect taste is achieved they are bottled and made ready for marketing. Benefits of temperature variation are achieved during the aging process by moving the barrels from upper floors to the lower ones and again back to the upper.

The Maker’s Mark Whisky is a premium ingredient of so many tempting cocktail recipes and is loved by bartenders all over the world as they provide a very fine and smooth spirit for cocktail making. Some of the popular Maker’s Mark Recipes are Maker’s Mark Manhattan, Maker’s Mark Grilled Steak Marinade, and Maker’s Mark Mulled Cider etc. It is also used in making of Cheese cakes.
