Tanqueray was established in 1830. The original formula was concocted by Charles Tanqueray in 1830. He passed on the formula and the distillery to his descendants until it was eventually acquired by its present owner, Diageo.

The original product of Tanqueray is a London dry gin. Using coriander, juniper and angelica root, Charles created this brand of gin with a very strong concentration of alcohol, reaching 47%. Technically, that’s already a very strong gin so in some parts of the globe the alcohol concentration was reduced to 40% just like in Australia.

Another flavor launched from the same company is the Tanqueray No Ten. It was introduced to the public in 1998 with even stronger alcohol content (47.3%). It uses a very expensive process of quadruple distillation. This gin uses grapefruits, lemons and limes to come up with this fine flavor.

Both of the previously mentioned gins of Tanqueray are really strong. So to answer the need to produce something milder, Diageo introduced the Tanqueray Sterling Vodka in 1989. Just like world renowned brand names for Vodka such as the Ketel One, Tanqueray uses the traditional and highly expensive copper pot still. According to the creators of Tanqueray Vodka, the copper pot still was more than 200 years old. The final product is a standard vodka which is already mild if you compare the Vodka to Tanqueray gins.

To go in between the strong and the mild brands of Tanqueray, Diageo recently introduced Tanqueray Rangpur Gin. Launched in the US in 2006, it was thought to go in between the strong London dry gin and the smoother vodka. The result is a very smooth gin that’s great even when taking straight. Although there are cocktails that could rival its taste, getting them straight is even better. The secret to this great tasting flavor is that the flavors are placed during the distillation. Other gins of Tanqueray are flavored after the distillation.

But not all drinks launched in Tanqueray brand has flourished. The Tanqueray Malacca Gin was introduced to the US market in 2000. It was supposedly a great alternative to the London dry gin by giving consumers a sweeter flavor by adding grapefruit. However, the product only lasted for four years. Diageo pulled out the product because of poor advertising and even poorer response and reviews from customers.

Even with one blunder, Tanqueray is undoubtedly one of the best gins in the world. Both strong gins were awarded with numerous medals from the prestigious San Francisco World Spirits Competition. The Tanqueray No. Ten is already inducted to the hall of fame as it has been awarded for three consecutive years as the best alcoholic drink. The particular drink was not only pitted against other gins but against vodkas, rums and tequilas. The original Tanqueray didn’t fall behind as it has been awarded as the best gin in 2004 and 2005 in the same competition.

Tanqueray is definitely a leading brand when it comes to gins. It has continuously developed their products to be at par with other great gins the world has to offer.
