Dom Pérignon often pronounced /dɔ̃ peÊiɲɔ̃/ in French and /dÉ”m/ or /dɔ̃ pɛɹɪnjÉ‘n/ in the English language is the prestige cuvée or champagne of Moët et Chandon.
Dom Perignon is named after a Benedictine monk named Dom Perignon who is reported to have discovered the champagne making process for creating sparkling wines.
Dom Perignon is known to be a vintage champagne. This means that all of the fine grapes gathered to make the wine are harvested within the same year. In the year 1921, the first vintage of Dom Perignon was produced, however it was not released for sale until 1936. Many other champagnes are considered to be non vintage types, which means that the grapes used in these champagnes are harvested in different years. Currently, in 2007, the current issue of Dom Perignon is from the year 1999 vintage and the current release of Dom Perignon Rose comes from the year 1996 vintage. The Dom Perignon line of champagne is not released each year, because the winemaker selects the best vintage years to make the champagne.
Richard Geoffroy is the current winemaker as of 2007 and he has ben the Chef du Cave or lead winemaker for Dom Perignon since 1996.
