Captain Morgan’s history relates way back to 17th Century when Captain Henry Morgan was appointed Lieutenant Governor of Jamaica. With Seagram Co. starting production of Rum in 1944 under the name, The Captain Morgan Rum, it has increased in popularity and at present under Diageo Management it has been able to achieve the third largest brand image in the United States and the seventh largest around the world.
Captain Morgan Rum is made or distilled from Sugar Cane. When the central stem of the sugar cane is sliced into small pieces in sugar mills and crushed between large rollers to extract its sweet juice, the process of rum making starts from there itself. The juice thus formed is boiled which allows the water content to evaporate leaving behind the sugar for crystallization. When the sugar crystals are separated, there remains a sweet black liquid known as molasses which is the base raw material for Captain Morgan Rum. These molasses are boiled again and then mixed with yeast and water and is allowed to ferment and then set to distill.
Captain Morgan’s rum are fermented for about three weeks and distilled twice and then aged for several years. For enhancing the color and enriching the flavor some caramel is added to it. After aging it for a long time with a minimum of about a year some island spices of the Caribbean islands are added at the final stage to the rum mixture in order to give it a unique taste and special characteristic attached to the brand name of Captain Morgan’s Rum.
The specialty of the Captain Morgan’s Rum lies in the fact that they are made in the traditional style set by the age old Jamaican Estate of Captain Henry Morgan. Using the finest ingredients as raw material combined with the excellent rum making skills gives the company a unique blend of both tradition and today’s discerning taste. The American Oak barrels used for aging rums gives a smoother taste to the rum. Its effective research phenomenon and the quality control checks performed at regular intervals ensures quality product up to the reputation of its brand image. The Caribbean islands provide the most suitable environment for rum making as they are large sugar cane producing countries.
